Beats Of The Heart - Popular Music of the World by Marre, Jeremy & Hannah Charlton - Kitap

Based on a British television series, Beats of the Heart provides a readable, if superficial, introduction to many of the world's most vital but little-known types of popular music. The focus is on the culturally significant, not the commercially successful. Music that springs from the struggles of the poor, the outcast, the racially disenfranchised: South African and Brazilian blacks, African and European gypsies, Jamaican Rastafarians. Oriental music is covered, as is regional music in the United States. The 13 brief chapters are filled with black-and-white photos that serve to remind the reader how inadequate description and interviews are to explain musical performances, which must be seen and heard to be understood. There is a good, short discography, but the skimpy index is to names only. A unique overview, but for most libraries not an essential purchase.
